WATCH VIRAL VIDEOS: Deadly Earthquake Hits Morocco, Death Toll Rises To 632; Indian PM Reacts

A highly powerful earthquake struck Morocco which resulted in killing hundreds of civilians. The earthquake occurred late Friday night destroyed the buildings and damaged the historic landmarks of the city. As per the Interior Ministry, so far more than 632 deaths have been confirmed.

Furthermore, a total of 153 people got severely injured and were sent for treatment to nearby hospitals. The ministry claimed that the majority of damage occurred outside of towns and cities.

The quake hit the city at 11: p.m. with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8. As per the US Geological Survey, the trembling of the earth remained for several seconds. It also reported a 4.9 aftershock magnitude post 19 minutes. However, as per the National Seismic Monitoring and Alert Network of Morocco, the quake was measured to be 7 in magnitude.

The epicenter of the deadly earthquake that struck the city on Friday night was present approximately 70 kilometers south of Marrakech and high in the Atlas Mountains. The epicenter was also near the highest peak in North Africa Toubkal and a popular Moroccan ski resort, Oukaimeden.

Citizens of Morocco shared videos of buildings breaking down to dust and rubble. Several parts of the famous Red Walls, the UNESCO World Heritage site located in the old city of Marrakech got damaged severely. The videos of tourists and local people evacuating restaurants and screaming hard could also be heard.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reacts

Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi reacted to this deadly mishap. He paid his condolences to all the passing souls and expressed his grief as well. On X, he tweeted, “Extremely pained by the loss of lives due to an earthquake in Morocco. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with the people of Morocco. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest. India is ready to offer all possible assistance to Morocco in this difficult time.”

Recent Deadly Earthquakes

Morocco is located in between the Eurasian and African plates. Thus, it is highly prone to frequent occurrence of earthquakes. When a quake hit Morocco in 2004, around 628 people lost their lives and 926 were severely injured.

Another 7.3-magnitude quake hit Algeria in 1970. This is considered one of the most destructive earthquakes killing 2,500 people and making 300,000 people homeless. In recent history, it was the most brutal and destructive earthquake.
