Press Freedom Day 2023: Theme, Quotes, Posters, Images, Messages, Wishes, Banners, Captions, and Cliparts

International Press Freedom Day is annually observed on May 3. The goal of the day which is organized by UNESCO is to encourage the press and media while raising public awareness of their importance. To cover topics that affect citizens worldwide, the press, which is regarded as the fourth pillar of democracy, is crucial. It’s not uncommon for journalists, editors, and journalists to risk their lives to expose the real story behind big events. It will also be 30 years after the first World Press Freedom Day was observed in 1993.

Theme

Press Freedom Day 2023 has its theme as “Shaping a future of rights: freedom of expression as the engine of other human rights.”

History

Following a suggestion by the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation) General Conference, World Press Freedom Day was first observed in 1993. The Windhoek Declaration, which was presented in 199 in Windhoek, Namibia, by African journalists, as a statement of press freedom principles, is commemorated on May 3 every year. Since that time, May 3 has been set aside every year to commemorate World Press Freedom Day.

Significance

It is important to recognize World Press Freedom Day because it serves as a reminder of the critical function that the media plays in a free society. It draws attention to the requirement that reporters and their sources of information be shielded from censorship, threats, and violence. It also acts as a reminder to organizations and governments to safeguard and uphold the freedom of expression as stated in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

On May 3, 2023, in addition to commemorating World Press Freedom Day, the event will also include the awarding of the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize. This esteemed honor is given to journalists who have made noteworthy achievements in the industry, especially those who have risked their lives to notify the public of important information.
