National Science Day: About Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman
Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, also known as C.V. Raman, was an Indian physicist whose work had a significant impact on the development of science in India. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for his revelation that perhaps some light that is refracted when it passes through a translucent medium changes in wavelength. According to Britannica, the Raman effect is what causes this phenomenon, which is now known as Raman scattering.
After graduating from the University of Madras, Presidency College, with a master’s in physics in 1907, Raman entered the Indian public economic division. He was hired as a physics professor at the University of Calcutta in 1917. He observed in 1928 that a small quantity of radiation, some of which has a more frequency range than the incoming light, exits perpendicularly to the original orientation when a clear substance is exposed to a light ray of one frequency.
According to the story, Raman was awarded in 1929 and appointed director of the department of physics at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore in 1933. He was named the Raman Research Institute’s director in 1947, and in 1961 he was appointed to the Pontifical Academy of Science. He launched the Indian Magazine of Physics as well as the Indian Academy of Sciences during his time, and he contributed to the founding of virtually every Indian scientific organization.
Raman mentored numerous pupils who went on to hold important positions in government and colleges in India and Myanmar (Burma). He was Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar’s uncle, and he and William Fowler shared the 1983 Nobel Prize in Physics.
