Juneteenth is a big day in the history of the U.S. which marks the liberation of enslaved Black Americans. The day is observed every year on June 19.

In 2021, Juneteenth was categorized as a federal holiday in the U.S. when President, Joe Biden, signed a bill regarding the same.

Juneteenth came into the limelight soon after the protests in 2020 over the police killings of many African Americans, including Rayshard Brooks, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd.

Juneteenth: History and Significance

The term Juneteenth is made up of a combination of two words, June and 19th. Moreover, it is also popularly known as Emancipation Day.

The day celebrates the day in 1865 when the Confederate states bowed down to end the civil war. Then a Union general also arrived in Texas and announced a bunch of enslaved African Americans were free. This initiative was taken under the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation of President Abraham Lincoln.

In 1980, Juneteenth was officially declared as a holiday by Texas.

Now the District of Columbia along with atleast 28 other states recognizes Juneteenth legally as a state holiday. Moreover, state workers are also given a paid day off.

Juneteenth is observed to particularly honor the victims of slavery. Since the arrival of Africans in America, they have been enslaved. Slavery went on for another 400 years.

Juneteenth Celebration

Juneteenth is celebrated by Americans to mark the 159th anniversary of liberation. They hold gatherings, and enjoy music and festive meals. The day also includes celebration in the form of marches and parades.

Citizens of the U.S. commemorate Juneteenth by reading books about the history and heritage of African Americans, organizing for civil rights, attending musical performances and festivals, and having a great dinner-in at black-owned restaurants.
