Gauhati University Marksheet Scam Exposed: 9 Suspects Including 3 Govt Officials Arrested

After NEET UG and UGC NET, another scam in India’s education system is making rounds on the internet. This scam involves increasing scores on sheets by taking money from students.

In this regard, nine people, including three government employees, were taken into custody by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Assam, reported The Hindustan Times.

The issue was brought up by the Gauhati University Postgraduate Students’ Union on Thursday.

Furthermore, Himanta Biswa Sarma, the CM, voiced his concerns to the media during his June 27 visit to Barpeta.

The students said,

“For increasing marks in one paper, they demand ₹16,000, and for all the papers in a semester, the rate is ₹100,000.”

Moreover, according to students; faculty, and employees from multiple departments are also involved in this scandal.

The students added,

“They have their agents at the university, and those agents reach out to the students with proposals for marks. For higher marks, the rates are higher.”

Insights on the Investigation

On June 27, the chief minister requested that the police and the education department look into the situation.

Later, CID was assigned in charge of the inquiry. With the assistance of university authorities, CID was able to identify other participants in the purported scam.

In the last two days, they have carried out raids in Guwahati, Barpeta, Dhubri, and a few other locations.

Up until Saturday night, they detained nine suspects, according to officials.

Shivtosh Mahato, Aminul Islam, Abul Baser, Hamezuddin, Moinul Haque, Alomgir Khan, Ismail Hussain, Krishan Krishnamurti, and Azizul Haque are the names of the people who have been arrested, according to the police.

The police have also informed that Aminul Islam is a librarian at a college in Barpeta, while Krishan Krishnamurti is employed by Gauhati University.

Furthermore, Shivtosh Mahato is employed at Dhubri Law College.

According to CID officials, there may be more arrests in the future as they continue their investigation.

According to Deccan Herald, CID added that the arrested individuals are being questioned so that sufficient proof can be gathered.

The Integrated University Management System (IUMS) employee is the brains behind the purported scam, according to Pratap Jyoti Handique, Gauhati University Vice-Chancellor.

According to him, the issue was initially discovered in Barpeta on June 3, at which point an internal investigation got underway.

The Vice-Chancellor added,

“The matter was limited to Barpeta initially, and we involved the police in the investigation. Now some fresh sources are becoming exposed, and the police have arrested some accused with adequate proof. We are cooperating with the police in the investigation.”
