Explained: Daniel Fernandes’ Show in Hyderabad Canceled After Comments About Jains, Whole Controversy Unwrapped

Daniel Fernandes a well-known stand-up comedian has invaded the media headlines as his show in Hyderabad was canceled due to heavy controversy on the internet.

A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader threatened him, and the show was called off, reported ET.

After the cancellation, Daniel Fernandes took to his social media account to express his side of the story.

Fernandes posted a video online expressing his concerns about the situation.

He mentioned that due to the unrest caused by his previous show, his other shows in Hyderabad “had to be rescheduled”.

Furthermore, Daniel Fernandes added that the video that “offended people was taken down”.

An apology was also posted.

The stand-up comedian added, “However, we are still receiving calls, messages, and emails threatening us with violence and vandalism. Nobody is ready to guarantee the safety of my audience, my crew, and me. I don’t want to put anybody in harm’s way because of something I have said.”

He further said, “It’s okay to disagree with an artist’s work. But to say that I would inflict violence upon an artist because I do not like their work isn’t the answer.”

Daniel Fernandes Controversy Explained

When Daniel Fernandes made some alleged comments about the Jain community, he found himself embroiled in controversy.

Fernandes had recently joked about members of the Jain community dressing up as Muslims to save goats from being slaughtered on Bakri Eid.

After this, Raja Singh, the BJP MLA, accused the stand-up comedian of throwing offensive and explicit jokes about the Jain community.

Moreover, Daniel Fernandes also received threats with various repercussions if the scheduled event was not canceled. The police commissioner was also urged to interfere.

The BJP MLA said, “History will remember what we will do to those who make fun of the Jain community or Hindu dharma.”

Raja Singh also reminded how the Munawar Faruqui incident had severe consequences. Similarly, according to the MLA, to maintain public order, the show was required to be canceled.

According to TOI, the Stand Comedian later clarified that he had no intention of disrespecting anybody. Moreover, he also understood that the Jain people were angry and upset.

Fernandes added, “This is not what comedy is about. Comedy is about all of us getting together, forgetting our worries, and having a laugh.
